Toonspeak Young People's Theatre

Teenage Sexual Health: The Musical!

The first Studio Sessions group spent the first few months of 2009 creating a unique new piece of theatre entitled Teenage Sexual Health: The Musical!

Working with Musical Director Brian James, and getting lots of useful information from North Glasgow Youth Health Centre, the young people decided to tackle the difficult topic of teenage sexual health by creating a musical!

The idea behind the Studio Sessions was to give more opportunities for young people to create theatre that was truly meaningful to them.  Several issues were considered on the way but in the end Teenage Sexual Health was felt to be the most important to the group after they discovered the appalling rates of sexually transmitted infection amongst young people.  There was also the chance for the group to try out several theatre genres including slapstick, before musical theatre was chosen.

Like all of Toonspeak's work, Teenage Sexual Health: The Musical! was a devised piece created entirely from scratch by the young people themselves, and the result was a hilarious but informative take on a very serious topic. Well done to the group for taking on such a huge challenge!

After the very successful first staging of the show, Toonspeak were asked to redevelop the piece in time for the Scottish Mental Health Arts & Film Festival in October 2009.  This time round the group faced arguably an even bigger challenge - talking about feelings.  By exploring the stresses, pressures and emotions surrounding sex, the cast gained a deeper understanding of the link between sexual health and emotional wellbeing.  The show matured as a result and the cast really excelled themselves. The DVD of the show will be ready in early 2010 - get in touch with us at Toonspeak to reserve your copy.

" Very educational, seemed to come from the young people opposed to having an adult's idea projected on to them."

" Certainly more effective than my biology teacher with a cucumber"
